Easter Flowers: Three Ways to Shine

Sun, Apr 10, 22 . Natalya Bucuy

When we think of Easter, candy and Easter Bunny come to mind first. But there is another element of this spring holiday that can and should take the center stage.

Easter flowers.

After all, it’s spring. With blooms coming up in our gardens and trees filling the air with fresh aromas, we crave more color and flower fragrance. Easter is the perfect holiday to introduce more flowers into everyday life. Whether you decide to gift or send flowers to your loved ones or bring some spring goodness into your own home, we’ve got the three perfect ways you can do just that. Here are our three favorite flowers for Easter and spring celebrations.

Easter Lily: the Perfect Easter Flower

With the holiday in its name, Easter Lily is, of course, at the top of the list when it comes to Easter flowers. Traditionally, they are associated with purity and resurrection. This comes from Christian legend, which says that after Jesus’ death and resurrection, his followers found these flowers growing in the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed the night before the crucifixion.

Whether you get this Easter flower in an arrangement or on its own, it’s important to keep these three facts in mind:

  • Lilies are toxic when eaten, so keep them away from pets and children
  • Direct sunlight and heat will shorten the life of teh cut flowers, so keep the blooms away in a cooler place away from sun rays.
  • Add some homemade flower food in the water to keep your bouquet fresh longer. To do that try adding 1 teaspoon of sugar (as food), 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (to adjust pH) and 1 teaspoon of bleach (to kill bacteria) to the full vase of water.

Daffodils: Signs of Spring

Did you know that there are over 13,000 types of daffodils in existence? Variety of shapes and colors gives us lots of choices when it comes to this spring and Easter flower.

Arranging daffodils with other flowers can be a tricky task as they can “poison” other flower varieties with their sap. The solutions for this include separating placing daffodils into a separate container within a vase or waiting 24 hours after flowers are cut to mix the stems.

To extend the life of your daffodils, change their water every two days.

Tulips: The Ultimate Spring Flowers

Many people know that Holland is the larger producer of tulips, with three billion bulbs every year. But we bet you didn’t know the following interesting fact about tulips:

In 1931 scientists discovered that striped tulips’ coloring was caused by a virus spread by aphids. Today, this coloring is reproduced artificially with the use of the virus to alter the flower’s DNA. (We know at this point everyone is sick of hearing about viruses, but this cool tidbit was too cool to pass)

Whatever colors you choose for your tulip presentation, you cannot go wrong. Especially since our florists at NE Flower Boutique create unique arrangements of tulips daily.

We have a wide variety of choices for your Easter flower arrangements using tulips as well as other flowers, so make sure to check them out!
